Why this gift works
A beginner's miniature painting kit from The Army Painter: eleven 18 ml paints from its Warpaints Fanatic range, including metallics and a wash, plus two brushes and a miniature to practice on. It covers the basics a first-time painter needs without buying a shelf of paints.
Painting minis is the hobby inside the hobby: a player paints their own character, a DM paints the monsters. A starter set turns "I'd like to try that" into an evening at the kitchen table with something to show for it.
Who is this gift for?
Great for
- A player who keeps admiring everyone else's figures
- A DM with a shelf of gray, bare monsters
Think twice if
- They have no patience for fiddly detail work
- They already own a full paint collection
The catch
Painting takes practice and the first miniature rarely looks like the box art - this is an invitation to a new hobby, not a quick craft, and it grows into more brushes and colors if it sticks.
Skip for someone with no patience for fiddly, detailed work, or a painter who already owns a full collection.
Worth knowing before you buy
- One practice miniature is included.
- The paints are water-based acrylics that clean up with water.
Why we like it
- Everything for a first miniature in one box
- Dropper bottles make it easy to use just a little paint
- Metallics and a wash make simple paint jobs look good
Questions people ask
Yes - it is built as a starter set, with basic colors, metallics, a wash and brushes in one box, plus a miniature to practice on.
