Every product on WhyToBuyThis is here because a real person decided it was worth your attention - not because a feed pushed it or a brand paid for placement. This page explains exactly how we pick, research and write about the gifts we recommend, so you can judge whether to trust them.

We curate, we don't scrape

We are a small, independent team of gift-hunters, not an automated price feed. Products are chosen by hand. Something makes the cut only when it solves a real gift problem - it delights a specific kind of person, it is genuinely useful or genuinely funny, and it is the sort of thing you'd be glad to give or get.

How a product earns a spot

We weigh each pick against a few plain questions:

• Does it actually solve a gifting problem? A clear recipient, occasion or moment it fits.
• Do the people who own it actually like it? We look for a strong, consistent track record from real buyers - not a single glowing listing.
• Is it well made for the money? We sort products into simple price tiers rather than chasing the cheapest option.
• Is it distinctive? We favour the clever, the unusual and the "wait, that exists?" finds over the obvious.

How we research - honestly

We research each product from the manufacturer's own specifications, the live product listing, and the published experiences of people who have bought and used it. We are clear about what that is and is not: it is careful desk research and curation. We do not claim to have personally hands-on tested every product we feature, and we never invent test results, statistics or reviews. If we are ever unsure about a detail, we leave it out rather than guess.

The catch, and who should skip it

A recommendation is only useful if it is honest about the downsides. So wherever we can, each pick tells you the catch - the real trade-off or limitation - and who should skip it. We would rather talk you out of the wrong gift than push you toward a sale.
