Why this gift works
A pen tablet from Wacom: they draw on the pad with the battery-free pen and the strokes appear on the computer screen. The active area is 6 by 3.7 inches, the pen reads 4,096 levels of pressure for thick-and-thin lines, and four ExpressKeys hold shortcuts like undo. It connects by USB and works with Windows, Mac, ChromeOS and Android.
It is an affordable way into digital art from the brand behind many professional tablets, and this listing bundles a pack of spare standard nibs. Wacom also offers bonus creative software with registration.
Who is this gift for?
Great for
- A teenager who wants to start drawing digital comics
- A sketchbook artist curious about painting on the computer
Think twice if
- They want to draw directly on a screen
- They don't have a computer to plug it into
The catch
It is a screenless tablet - they draw on the pad while looking at the monitor - which takes some hours to get used to, and the small size suits a laptop better than a big desktop screen.
Skip for someone who wants to draw directly on a screen; that needs a pen display or a tablet with a stylus, at a much higher price.
Worth knowing before you buy
- They draw on the pad and watch the screen, which takes practice.
- This model is USB-wired, not Bluetooth.
- Spare standard nibs come bundled in this listing.
Why we like it
- Pressure-sensitive lines, like a real pencil
- A pen that never needs charging
- Works with Windows, Mac, ChromeOS and Android
- An affordable way into digital art
Questions people ask
Yes - Wacom lists Windows, Mac, ChromeOS and Android compatibility.
