- Honest reviewThe catch, not just the hype
Why this gift works
A hangboard is how climbers train finger strength at home. The Metolius Simulator 3D is a 28 x 8.75 inch board with a big variety of holds laid out on a broad arc that tapers outward and downward - Metolius says the shape is better for the body and helps reduce injuries - and a fine texture that is kind to skin.
It comes with a training guide, full instructions and the mounting hardware. For a climber who wants to get stronger between gym sessions, it is one of the most useful things they can own.
Who is this gift for?
Great for
- A climber stuck at a grade who wants to train
- Someone who can't get to the gym every day
Think twice if
- They are new to climbing
- They rent and can't drill into walls
The catch
It has to be fixed securely to the wall - usually screwed into studs with a backing board above a doorway - which renters may not be able to do, and hangboarding is hard on fingers for newer climbers.
Skip for a beginner in their first months of climbing, or someone with nowhere to mount it.
Worth knowing before you buy
- It must be mounted securely, usually into studs with a backing board.
- Start easy - finger tendons adapt slowly.
Why we like it
- Huge variety of grips on one board
- Skin-friendly fine texture
- Training guide and mounting hardware included
