Dad, I Want to Hear Your Story is a guided journal by Jeffrey Mason, from the Hear Your Story series, that asks a father about his life one question at a time: growing up, his teenage years, work, marriage and being a dad. This hardcover edition has 160 pages and more than 300 prompts, each with room to answer, so it never feels like writing a memoir - just answering the next question.
Mason created the series after his own father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. For an older man who says he needs nothing, it tells him something he may not hear often: that his story matters to you. The stories that disappear are the everyday ones nobody thought to ask about, and this is a simple way to keep them.
It only works if he fills it in, and a man who is not a writer may leave it on a shelf - it goes best when someone sits with him and asks the questions out loud.
Skip for a very private man who would find the questions intrusive, or one for whom handwriting has become a struggle - a recorded conversation may suit him better.
