Why this gift works

The Band of Brothers book by Stephen E. Ambrose follows Easy Company of the 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne, from training in 1942 through D-Day at Utah Beach, Holland and the Battle of the Bulge to Berchtesgaden in 1945. First published in 1992, it was adapted into the 10-episode 2001 HBO miniseries produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. This is Simon & Schuster's 2017 paperback, 336 pages, with a foreword by Tom Hanks for the 25th anniversary.

It is a staple of military reading lists because it is about the men rather than the maps - training, loyalty and leadership under unimaginable pressure. Veterans and service members often recognize their own units in it.

Who is this gift for?

Great for

  • A veteran who loved the HBO series
  • A young service member building a reading list

Think twice if

  • They have already read it

The catch

It is a war history with graphic combat, and readers who have seen the HBO series will know much of the story already.

Skip for someone who has read it (many have) or who prefers not to read about combat.
